Brief Biography

Danny Roussopoulos is a retired union member and leftist activist. He’s collected his own material over the years and now that he has time on his hands he wants to research further in the history of Vancouver / BC / Canadian labour movements. He’d like to articulate his own views on the events in which he participated because he doesn’t seem them represented anywhere.

Details

Interest in archives & Life experience

Why interested in archives: Danny is a long-time trade unionist, he was a participant during the Solidarity movement and strikes in 1983. He was active in his local, as well as various leftist groups, and he participated in oral history projects in the 80s and 90s as an interviewee. Now he wants to do own research on history of labour / political movements.

Community affiliations: Still connected to union movement, but not actively involved

Represented in archives: Maybe, his union’s archives are held at a repository, and he’s not sure what happened to the interviews he gave.

Professional affiliations: Union member

Access needs and mobility: Has some mobility and sight issues.

Motivations

Why: Interest in history, desire for social justice, nostalgia and the pleasure of recounting (and arguing about) past struggles.

Frustrations

Barriers: Danny doesn’t have a lot of patience for learning new technologies and finds them frustrating. He doesn’t trust institutions and thinks they don’t have time for people like him.

Info and Tech Access & Experience

Hardware: Has a PC computer

Software: Office software, Google, email

Network connectivity: Has internet

Experience with archival tools: None

Experience with archival frameworks: Minimal

Comfort with learning technology: Not great

Goals

What do they want to do: Danny wants to research labour movement history, partly out of nostalgia as he recalls his own participation in the events and he knows many of the personalities who were involved. But he also has his own views and opinions that he’d like to “put on the record” but isn’t sure how to go about it.

What relationship do they want to the archives: Danny has time on his hands and he has several boxes of materials relating to his participation in his local as well various political groups. This material is very important to him, but he doesn’t think anyone “would want this crap”.
