Prototypes
Phase 1: Crossing Fonds: Participatory Workshop
Phase 1 involved building the foundation of Crossing Fonds’ Omeka S platform, and was thereby primarily concerned with the “Access The Fonds” stage. This stage established strategies for connecting and managing materials and their extensive metadata
As focus for the Participatory Workshop, this prototype featured modules that instantiated item level interactions from participants.
Commenting

Commenting allowed participants to submit their thoughts via a message board under each item page.
Curation

Curation allowed participants to add items to their own personal Curation page. This page was accessible via the top navigation menu.
Collecting / Add Item

Collecting allowed participants to submit items and their associative metadata via the “Add Item” page, available in the top navigation menu.
Contribution

Contribution allowed participants to submit metadata for items. During the workshop this was limited to custom metadata fields like “User Contributed Tags”. Pending admin approval, contributed metadata is added to the item.
Phase 0: https://crossingfonds.github.io/
Phase 0 prototypes and widget research were developed before establishing the platform’s central server, and therefore focused on light weight integrations of javascript libraries and plugins via local server and GitHub Pages configurations. The supporting material samples Case Study 1.
Explored widgets and plugins included Mirador (mirador-textoverlay, mirador-image-tools, mirador-annotorious), OpenSeadragon, Leaflet (image distortion), D3, and Annotorious.
Mirador

The Mirador prototype includes preloaded Crossing Fonds materials in various file types (.jpg, .tif, .pdf, .mp4, .mp3) supplemented with the mirador-image-tools plugin. Implementations of annotations and text overlay were also explored but required more backend support.
D3

D3 explorations involved converting VIVO’s archive logs into numerical data and data visualizations.
Leaflet

This prototype examined possible interfaces that involved map data and overlaying. The Distortable Image plugin was included to facilitate interactivity. Currently this prototype requires the Chrome browser.
Participatory Design Workshop 1

Accompanying the phase 0 prototypes was a Widgets Workshop, detailing explorations in Mirador, D3, and Leaflet, as well as potential plugins to be implemented in future prototypes
